The history of Delhi can be traced back to the 6th Century BCE.  New Delhi was designed and built in the 20th Century. 
Delhi is a Union Territory and it has borders with the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Delhi is surrounded by Haryana on three sides and Uttar Pradesh is located to the East of Delhi. Union Territory of Delhi has 9 districts and New Delhi is one of the 9 districts of Delhi.  New Delhi is the National Capital of India.
Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires, most notably the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. The city has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period The foundation stone of New Delhi was laid by Emperor George V during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by Viceroy and Governor-General of India Lord Irwin.
