ISC Class 12 Physics Marking Scheme

The 12th class examination is something which has entirely different impact and importance when compared to any other class. The class 12th percentage is something which is asked everywhere, to get admissions into any college, or in any job interview; you cannot skip your class 12th percentage.

ISC Class 12 Physics Marking Scheme

ISC and CBSE board have some similarities and some differences. CBSE approves both Hindi and English as the language of instruction, but ISC does not recommend Hindi. In ISC, internal assessments are vital, and practical tests are aggregated with the overall scores. Moreover, CBSE is recognized by the Indian government, and ISC is not. However, certificates provided by both of them are globally valid.

Class 12 Physics is a subject which requires you to remember derivations, theorems, diagrams and of course the formulas to solve the problems. Therefore, preparation according to the marks, has a unique importance and can prove to be really effective.

ISC Class 12 Physics syllabus consists of 9 units and the question paper is of 70 marks as follows.

Unit Topic Marks
1 Electrostatics 14
2 Current Electricity
3 Magnetic Effect of Current and Magnetism 16
4 Electromagnetic induction and Alternating Current
5 Electromagnetic Waves
6 Optics 20
7 Dual nature of Matter and Radiations 13
8 Atoms and Nuclei
9 Electronic Devices 7
Total 70

1. Electrostatics

Under Electrostatics, we have two chapters namely:

Electric charges and fields

This chapter includes Electric Charges; Conservation of charge, Coulomb’s law-force between two point charges, forces between multiple charges; superposition principle and continuous charge distribution.

Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Electric potential, potential difference, electric potential due to a point charge, a dipole and system of charges; equipotential surfaces, electrical potential energy of a system of two point charges and of electric dipole in an electrostatic field.

2. Current Electricity

Under Second unit, we have following concepts like Electric current, flow of electric charges in a metallic conductor, drift velocity, mobility and their relation with electric current; Ohm’s law, electrical resistance, V-I characteristics (linear and non-linear), electrical energy and power, electrical resistivity and conductivity.

3. Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism

Magnetic effects of Current and Magnetism includes two chapters namely:

Moving Charges and Magnetism

Concept of magnetic field, Oersted’s experiment.

Biot – Savart law and its application to current carrying circular loop.

Magnetism and Matter

Magnetism and Matter involves Current loop as a magnetic dipole and its magnetic dipole moment. Magnetic dipole moment of a revolving electron. Magnetic field intensity due to a magnetic dipole (bar magnet) along its axis and perpendicular to its axis.

4. Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current

This unit also consists of two chapters namely:

Electromagnetic Induction

This involves Faraday’s laws, induced emf and current; Lenz’s Law, Eddy currents.

Alternating Current

Alternating currents, peak and rms value of alternating current/voltage; reactance and impedance; LC oscillations (qualitative treatment only.

5. Electromagnetic Waves

Basic idea of displacement current, Electromagnetic waves, their characteristics, their transverse nature (qualitative ideas only).

Electromagnetic spectrum (radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays) including elementary facts about their uses.

6. Optics

This Unit consists of two chapters namely:

Ray Optics

Reflection of light, spherical mirrors, mirror formula. Refraction of light, total internal reflection and its applications, optical fibres, refraction at spherical surfaces, lenses, thin lens formula, lensmaker’s formula.

Wave Optics

Wavefront and Huygens principle, reflection and refraction of plane wave at a plane surface using wave fronts. Proof of laws of reflection and refraction using Huygens principle.

7. Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation

This unit consists of Dual nature of radiation. Photoelectric effect, Hertz and Lenard’s observations; Einstein’s photoelectric equation-particle nature of light.

8. Atoms and Nuclei

Alpha-particle scattering experiment; Rutherford’s model of atom; Bohr model, energy levels, hydrogen spectrum.

9. Electronic Devices

Energy bands in conductors, semiconductors and insulators (qualitative ideas only)

Semiconductor diode – I-V characteristics in forward and reverse bias, diode as a rectifier.

10. Communication System

The last unit consists of Elements of a communication system (block diagram only); bandwidth of signals (speech, TV and digital data); bandwidth of transmission medium. Propagation of electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere, sky and space wave propagation, satellite communication.

Everybody prepares for examination, but intelligent preparation always outputs the better result, and it can only be achieved by preparing according to ISC Class 12 Physics marking scheme.
