Kerala Higher Secondary (HSE)

Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education is in charge of creating the curriculum, syllabus and enforcing other educational policies for the SSLC and Higher Secondary Examinations. They aim to promote Higher Secondary Education amongst all. Kerala State Board of Higher Secondary Education is in charge of maintaining the operations for Class 11 and 12 and is also in charge of conducting the final exams for Class 12. These years are critical for the students, as their performance here will determine their admission for further higher studies. The HSE Board

Earlier known as the pre-degree courses, the Class 11th and 12th have now been segregated from the University to bring it under the authority of DHSE (Directorate of Higher Secondary Education). They are also called Plus One and Plus Two classes. This was completed by the year 2001. This board will conduct the final exams at the end of the year for the Class 12 or higher secondary students. Students enrolled for Class 12 under the Kerala Education Board will have to give these HSE exams and pass, before they can be declared eligible to continue with their education.

Students can choose from the given scheme of work for Kerala Plus Two. There are languages as optional or second language (Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Urdu, French, Latin, Syriac, Russian, Sanskrit, Arabic, Contemporary English, Latin etc.), English literature as a main subject, Geology, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Home Science, Electronics, Anthropology, Journalism, Social Work and so on.

  • Total Number of Students

The number of students appearing for the Kerala Board Plus Two exams have significantly dropped over the past few years, even if the passing percentage has increased. The chart below depicts the number of students who attended the exams and also the number who have passed the exams, over a period from 2016-2018.

  • Overall Pass Percentage of Kerala Plus Two Exam

The passing percentage has been good for Kerala Board HSE exams over the past few years. It has shown an upward swing from 2016 to 2018. The overall pass percentage for the year 2016 is 80.94%, while it stands at 83.37% for 2017 and 83.75% for 2018.

In the year 2018, about 3.72 lakh regular students have registered for the exam. Out of this, some 69,971 students are from open school and 33,369 are compartmental candidates.

Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education Class 12 Exams

Kerala HSE Board usually conducts the exams in the month of November for the Plus Two students of the Kerala Board. The questions asked are taken from the textbooks prescribed to them as per the Kerala board syllabus for class 12 students. Passing these Kerala Board of Higher Secondary Education Class 12 Exams, also makes the students eligible to continue their studies, opting for Graduation in any stream of subjects of their choice. Many students also opt for professional courses like Medicine or Engineering, on the basis of the stream they had selected for their Plus One or Plus Two.

The exams for the year 2020 was conducted from 26 May 2020 to 30 May 2020 during the afternoon session. Subjects without Practicals were of 2 Hrs 45 Minutes including the 15 minutes Cool Off Time. While for subjects with practicals except for Biology and Music, the time given to write the exam is 2hrs15min(again including the 15 minutes cool-off time).  At the same time, the time allotted for Biology exam is 2hrs25min, which includes the 1hr10minutes for botany including the 10-minute cool off time, 5 minutes preparatory time and the rest 1hr10minutes for Zoology exams. And for the Music exam, the time allotted is 1hr45minutes including the 15minutes cool off time.

  3. Time table of class 12 exams will display on page
  4. Since it is in pdf format, students can also download and print it for future reference

Kerala HSE Board Exam Results 

After the exams, students eagerly wait for the results to come out, as it will determine their course of studies ahead. Results of Kerala Plus Two is often announced in the month of May. The result the marks in each subject, overall marks, percentage or grades, besides candidates’ details and qualifying status. Students can check the official website for more details:

  • First, log in to the official website, keralaresults.nic.in
  • Then, click on the “DHSE Exam Results 2019 link
  • Enter the roll number and date of birth in the specified space and section
  • Then click on submit
  • Now, results will be displayed on the screen
  • Students can also download and take a printout for future use
