Unit of Magnetic Flux

Magnetism is indeed a vast chapter for students with a lot of topics and concepts to cover. However, on this page, we will discuss the unit of magnetic flux.

Well, in simple terms magnetic flux is defined as a measure of the strength of a magnetic field over a given area. It has the dimension mass length squared per time squared electric current. It is denoted by Greek letters Phi and has a symbol φ. Further, magnetic flux is basically used to describe the effects of the magnetic force on something occupying a given area. Now let’s look at the magnetic flux units.

SI Unit of Magnetic Flux

The SI unit of magnetic flux is the Weber (Wb). A flux density of one Wb/m2 (one Weber per square metre) is one Tesla (T). Weber is commonly expressed in a multitude of other units.

\(\begin{array}{l}Wb = \frac{kg.m^{2}}{s^{2}.A} = V.s = H.A = T.m^{2} = \frac{J}{A} = 10^{8}M.x\end{array} \)

where,

  • Wb = Weber
  • T = Tesla
  • V = volt
  • m = metre
  • J = joule
  • s = second
  • H = Henry
  • A = ampere
  • Mx = Maxwell

The unit has also been named after German physicist, Wilhelm Eduard Weber.

Other Common Units

In the CGS unit of magnetic flux is measured in Abweber or Maxwell. Other units include statweber and unit_pole.
