Solution

  • When only the physical properties such as the shape, size, colour, state or appearance of the substance change, then it is called a physical change. There will be no change in the chemical composition of the substance.
  • When the chemical properties of a substance change along with the change in their chemical composition, then it is called a chemical change.
  • When sugar is heated in a dish indefinitely, it begins to evaporate and gets foggy due to water vapour and produce a black powdery substance which is named as charcoal. This is called charring of sugar.
  • The charcoal is prepared from sugar by chemical changes into the composition of sugar.
  • Hence, it is a chemical change.
