A student sets up an experiment on photosynthesis as follows: He takes soda water in a glass tumbler and add chlorophyll extracts into the contents and keeps the tumbler exposed to sunlight hoping that he has provided necessary ingredients for photosynthesis to proceed (viz., CO2, H2O, chlorophyll and light). Intermediates of light and dark reaction:

  1. Photosynthesis is the process by which photosynthetic organisms convert light energy into chemical energy with the generation of food in the form of glucose.
  2. In the light reaction, NADPH and ATP are produced, which are used to drive the carbon dioxide fixation process during the dark reaction.

Experiment:

  1. According to the experiment performed by the student, photosynthesis will not take place because intact chloroplast is needed for the process of photosynthesis.
  2. The enzymes specific for the process are found in the structures inside the chloroplast and hence chloroplast is required with chlorophyll to perform photosynthesis.
  3. The chlorophyll extract in the presence of water can only absorb the light energy but the whole complex which carries out the light reaction is not present.
  4. The flow of electrons will not happen and no pH gradient will be formed and hence ATP required for fixing of carbon dioxide will not be produced.
  5. Reducing agent like NADP+ is not produced in the process and hence the process will not occur.
