Question

(a) Why is diffusion insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of large multicellular organisms like humans?

Open in App
Solution

Answer:

Human beings are multicellular organisms having a complex body structure. The oxygen requirement in multicellular organisms cannot be met by diffusion because:
Diffusion is a slow process. Due to a large number of cells and the huge size of the body the oxygen cannot diffuse quickly into all cells of the body.
In multicellular organisms, the cells are not in direct contact with the outside environment to facilitate diffusion as in unicellular organisms.
