Question

An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a convex mirror of focal length 5 cm. (i) Draw a ray-diagram showing the formation of image. (ii) State two characteristics of the image formed. (iii) Calculate the distance of the image from mirror.

Solution

(a)

(b) Focal length(f) of the lens is less than the object distance(u). This means that the object is kept behind the focus. As we can see, the image is virtual, erect, and diminished.
(c) Given conditions
Object Distance(u) = -10 cm
Focal length of the lens (f) = 5 cm
Now, Applying the Mirror's Formula,
1 over f space equals space 1 over v plus 1 over u rightwards double arrow 1 fifth space equals space 1 over v plus fraction numerator 1 over denominator negative 10 end fraction rightwards double arrow 1 fifth space equals space fraction numerator 10 minus v over denominator 10 v end fraction rightwards double arrow 10 v space equals space 50 minus 5 v rightwards double arrow 15 space equals 50 rightwards double arrow v space equals space 50 over 15 rightwards double arrow v space equals space 10 over 3 i m a g e space d i s tan c e space equals space 3.33 c m h e n c e space t h e space i m a g e space i s space f o r m e d space o n space t h e space o t h e r space s i d e space o f space t h e space m i r r o r space a t space t h e space d i s tan c e space o f space 3.33 c m
