  1. Algal bloom refers to a rapid increase in the population of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in water bodies.
  2. It causes discolouration of water.
  3. Fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus seep into water bodies which in turn increases algal growth.

Harmful effects of algal blooms:

  1. Algal blooms are extremely harmful to humans.
  2. Algal blooms release toxins that contaminate water.
  3. Consumption of contaminated water causes eye infections, skin, respiratory, and gastrointestinal diseases in humans.
