Solution
Plasmid:
The plasmid is a circular, double-stranded DNA or extrachromosomal genetic material which is distinct from a cell's chromosomal DNA.
They are naturally present in the bacterial cells and sometimes they are present in eukaryotes also.
It provides antibiotic resistance to the bacteria.
They are present in the cytoplasm of bacteria and are capable of undergoing self-replication independent of genomic DNA.
It also helps in the conjugation process, which helps in the transfer of genetic material from one bacteria to another one.
Example- fertility F plasmids, virulence plasmids, degradation plasmids, etc.
They find wide applications in recombinant DNA technology and gene therapy.
