Question

Calculate the molecular mass of Calcium carbonate CaCO3

Given Atomic masses: Ca = 40u, C = 12u, O = 16u

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Calculating the molecular mass

Molecular mass is equal to the sum of atomic masses of all the atoms present in one molecule of a substance.

Step 2: Given data

Atomic masses: Ca = 40u, C = 12u, O = 16u

Step 3: Finding the molecular mass for the given data

The molecular mass of CaCO3 = (Number of calcium atoms x atomic mass of calcium) + (Number of carbon atoms x atomic mass of carbon) + (Number of oxygen atoms x atomic mass of oxygen)

The molecular mass of CaCO3 = 1×40+1×12+3×16

The molecular mass of CaCO3 = 40+12+48=100 g/mol

Hence, the molecular mass of Calcium carbonate CaCO3 is 100 g/mol
