Plant cell walls are made of cellulose which is completely permeable and offers no barrier to the entry of dissolved material into cells. Its role is one of providing structural support to the plant cells. Beneath the cell wall is the cell membrane which is selectively pemeable (as in an animal cell). The tonoplast is an internal membrane and encloses the central vacoule in the middle of a plant cell and is not associated with the cell wall or the cell membrane.
