Some plants are able to produce fruits without fertilization. Such fruits are called parthenocarpic fruits. They are seedless or contain empty or non-viable seeds. Some of the common examples of natural parthenocarpy are fruits formed as a result of ovary development without pollination, e.g., Citrus, banana, pineapple, etc., fruits formed as a result of stimulation by pollination but without fertilization e.g., certain orchids; fruits formed as a result of fertilization followed by abortion of the embryos, e.g., grapes, peaches, cherries, etc. Transfer of pollen grain from an anther to the stigma of the same flower or a different flower in the same plant is called autogamy.
