Down syndrome:

  1. Down syndrome is a genetic defect that is caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra copy of chromosomes.
  2. Down syndrome is also known as trisomy 21.
  3. It is caused by a defect in cell division known as ‘non-disjunction’.
  4. This defect leads to physical and mental challenges.
  5. A few symptoms of down syndrome are almond-shaped eyes that are in a slanting position, small pinky fingers, and poor muscle tone.

Down syndrome and fetal heart rate:

  1. According to research, fetal heartbeat rate has been shown to be higher than the normal range in babies suffering from down syndrome.
  2. The normal average heart rate lies between 110to 160 beats per minute.
