Solution

Differentiation

Roasting Calcination
Ore is heated in presence of excess air or oxygen Ore is heated in absence or in limited air or Oxygen.
Used in sulphide ore. Used in Carbonate ore.
SO₂ is produced along with metal oxide. CO₂ is produced along with metal oxide.

Example of roasting :

2ZnS+3O22ZnO+2SO22PbS+3O22PbO+2SO22CuS+3O22Cu2O+2SO2

Example of calcination:
Fe2O3.2H2OFe2O3(s)+xH2O(g)ZnCO3ZnO(s)+CO2(g)CaCO3+MgCO3CaO(s)+MgO(s)+2CO2(g)

Thus, in calcination compounds are heated in absence of air or oxygen whereas in roasting air or oxygen is present at the time of heating.
