How does lightning occur when air is an insulator ?

Open in App
Solution

The electricity passing through the atmosphere rapidly heats and expands the air as a result of which successive portions of air become conductive as the electrons and positive ions of air molecules are pulled away from each other and forced to flow in opposite directions.
