Sex chromosomes:

  1. Sex chromosomes can be defined as the chromosomes which have genes for the determination of sex.
  2. They are also known as allosomes or heterosomes.
  3. Chromosomes are the thread-like materials present inside the nucleus which contains genetic information.
  4. In human beings, there are a total of 23 pairs of chromosomes (46 in total), out of which 22 pairs are called autosomes (other than sex chromosomes) and 1 pair is sex chromosomes which determine the sex of the newborns.
  5. Both males and females have 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes.
  6. The male has one X and one Y sex chromosome and the female has two X chromosomes.
