  2. Iodized salt is a refined version of sea salt that has been fortified with iodine.
  3. Other salts are utilized for commercial and industrial applications as well, although iodized salt is mostly used for cooking since iodine is added for nutritional needs.

(i) Importance of iodized salt:

  1. Iodized salt helps in the production of hormones that regulate heart rate and blood pressure.
  2. It also aids in the burning of excess fat deposits that may contribute to heart disease.
  3. Salt improves optimum hydration levels and electrolyte balance.
  4. Iodized salt also helps to keep harmful bacteria in the intestines from multiplying.

(ii) Need for Iodized salt:

  1. Iodized salt with iodine is required for the thyroid gland to produce the thyroxin hormone (the primary hormone released by the thyroid gland into the bloodstream).
  2. Thyroxin controls glucose, protein, and fat metabolism in the body to ensure optimal growth balance.

(ii) Deficiency of Iodine in the diet

Goitre can be caused by a lack of iodine in the diet.
