Question

In a snooker game, a player strikes the white ball and imparts a velocity of 4 m/s. The white ball strikes another red ball which was initially at rest. Assuming that the collision of the balls is perfectly elastic and masses of both balls are the same, what are the velocities of the red and white balls respectively?

Solution

The correct option is D 4 m/s,0 m/s
Given:
Initial velocity of white ball is 4 m/s and red ball is 0 m/s.

From the concept of collision, we know,
m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2
(m1×4)+(m2×0)=m1v1+m2v2
Divide above equation by m1
4=v1+m2m1v2
As m1=m2,
v1+v2=4(i)

Also from conservation of kinetic energy,
12m1(4)2+0=12m1(v1)2+0+12m2(v2)2+0(ii)

Substituting (i) in (ii) and solving:
we get v1=0 m/s and v2=4 m/s

The final velocity of the red ball becomes 4 m/s and that of the white ball becomes 0 m/s.
