Question

In Dumas method for estimation of nitrogen 30g of an organic compound gave 50ml of nitrogen collected at 300k temperature and 715mm pressure. Find the % of nitrogen in the given compound.

    Solution

    We know that aqueous tension of water at 300 K is 15 mm.
    Mass of the subs = 30g
    Vol. of N2 = 50 ml
    Room temp = 300 K
    Vapour pressure of water at 300K = 15 mm
    Actual pressure (dry gas) = 715 - 15 = 700 mm Hg.
    Convert the Vol. at experimental conditions to vol at stp.
    P1V1T1=P2V2T2
    =41.9 cm3
    Convert the volue at spt into mass
    222400 cm3 of N2 at STP weights 28 g.
    41.9 cm3 would weigh
    28×41.922400g
    % of N2.
    Mass of N2 at STPMass of the substance taken×100
    28×41.9×10022400×0.3=17.46%
