Source of oxygen:

  • The source from which the organisms receive the oxygen gas for their use is the source of oxygen.
  • The terrestrial animals receive oxygen from their surrounding atmosphere through their nose.
  • The aquatic organisms receive the oxygen from the water in which they live through their gills. The oxygen is dissolved in the water.

Breathing rate:

  • The breathing rate is the breath number an organism takes in a minute. One inhalation followed by an exhalation comprises one breath.
  • The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is less than the oxygen in the atmospheric air.
  • The less oxygen in water causes the aquatic organism to breathe faster to fulfill their oxygen requirement, causing their breathing rate to become faster than terrestrial animals.
