A young anther contains specialised cells called sporogenous cells. These cells form microspore mother cells inside a sac-like structure called microsporangium. Microspore mother cells undergo meiosis to form microspores. Microspores then absorb nutrition and undergo further development to form pollen grains. The pollen grains consist of vegetative and generative cells. The generative cells give rise to the male gametes in the pollen grain while the vegetative cell gives rise to the pollen tube.
