Question

Solution A is a sodium hydroxide solution. Solution B is a weak acid. C is dilute sulphuric acid. Which solution will
(i) liberate sulphur dioxide from sodium sulphite,
(ii) give a white precipitate with zinc sulphate solution,
(iii) contain solute molecules and ions?

Solution

(i) Solution C liberates sulphur dioxide from sodium sulphite. Sodium sulphite on reaction with dilute sulphuric acid produces sodium sulphate salt and liberates sulphur dioxide gas.
Na2SO3 + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + H2O + SO2

(ii) Solution A gives a white precipitate with zinc sulphate solution. Sodium hydroxide reacts with zinc sulphate to form a white precipitate of zinc hydroxide.
ZnSO4 + 2NaOH → Zn(OH)2 + Na2SO4

(iii) Solution B contains both solute and water molecules because a weak acid ionises partially.
