Preparation by solvay’s process:
1. Saturation of brine with NH3 and CO2 (in ammonia absorber)

CaCl2+(NH4)2CO3CaCO3+2NH4Cl
MgCl2+(NH4)2CO3MgCO3+2NH4Cl

Ammoniated brine is filtered to remove Ca and Mg impurities as their insoluble carbonates.
