Question

State which of the following chemical reactions will take place or not, giving the suitable reason for each.

  1. Zn(s)+CuSO4(l)ZnSO4(l)+Cu(s)
  2. Fe(s)+ZnSO4(l)FeSO4(l)+Zn(s)
  3. Zn(s)+FeSO4(l)ZnSO4(l)+Fe(s)

Solution

Part:1

  1. Zn(s)+CuSO4(l)ZnSO4(l)+Cu(s)
  2. Zinc is more reactive than Copper, therefore Zinc can displace Copper from the Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) solution.
  3. Hence, the reaction will take place.

Part:2

  1. Fe(s)+ZnSO4(l)FeSO4(l)+Zn(s)
  2. Iron is less reactive than Zinc, therefore Iron cannot displace Zinc from Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO4) solution.
  3. Hence, the reaction will not take place.

Part:3

  1. Zn(s)+FeSO4(l)ZnSO4(l)+Fe(s):
  2. Zinc is more reactive than Iron, therefore Zinc can displace Iron from the Iron Sulphate (FeSO4) solution.
  3. Hence, the reaction will take place.
