Question

The dimensional formula for impulse is _______.

Open in App
Solution

Impulse:

  1. Impulse can be defined as the term used to quantify the effect of force acting over a short interval of time to change the momentum of an object.
  2. Mathematically, Impulse=Force×Time
  3. It is represented by the symbol J and is usually expressed in Newton seconds or kgms-1.
  4. Dimensional Formula of Impulse:
    As we know that the dimensional formula of force and time are [MLT-2] and [T] respectively
    Putting these in the formula of impulse, we get:
    [Impulse]=[Force]×[Time][Impulse]=[MLT-2]×[T][Impulse]=[MLT-1]

Thus, the dimensional formula for impulse is [MLT-1].
