Question

The electron configuration of phosphorus is 2,8,5 but the valency of phosphorus is 1- ..how?

Solution

Looks like you have had a slight misunderstanding. The valency of phosphorus is 3 or 5.
Valency is the number of electrons the element can hold in its outer most shell ie. the combining capacity of the element. Phosphorus has 15 electrons out of which 5 are in outermost shell so the valency is 3 or 5. This is because phosphorus can either gain 3 electrons or lose the 5 electrons it already has in order to obtain octet configuration.

Hope this helps :)
