Sahara Desert is the world’s largest hot desert in the world. It stands in third position in comparison with all the deserts. The first two deserts are the cold desert and Sahara comes at third.

What is a desert?

Desert is an arid region that is mainly characterized by extremely high or low temperatures and has scarce vegetation. Depending on the climate and temperature there can be hot deserts or cold deserts.

World’s Largest Hot Desert- Sahara Desert

  • The desert occupies an area of around 8.54 million sq. km
  • The desert spreads and touches eleven countries. They are Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara
  • One can face the climate of scorching heat and dry season
  • Temperature is as high as around 50ºC during day time and freezing cold at night around 0ºC
  • Cactus, date palms and acacia are the common plants found in this desert
  • Camels, hyenas, jackals, foxes, scorpions, many varieties of snakes and lizards are the wildlife species found in the desert
  • Bedouins and Tuaregs who are nomadic tribes commonly found in these areas. Their occupation is mainly rearing of goats and sheeps
