Question

The reaction of O3 with chlorine atom is given as:
O3(g)+Cl(g)O2(g)+ClO(g); k1=5.2×109 L mol1sec1
ClO(g)+O(g)Cl(g)+O2(g); k2=2.6×1010 L mol1sec1
Which of these values is closest to the rate constant of the overall reaction?
O3(g)+O(g)2O2(g)

Solution

The correct option is C 5.2×109
k1[O3][Cl]=ddt[ClO]k2[ClO][O]=ddt[ClO]k1[O3][Cl]=k2[ClO][O]k1k2[O3][Cl][O]=[ClO]
Similarly,
k2k1[ClO][O][O3]=[Cl]
We find that on combining
O3+Cl+ClOO2+ClO+Cl+O2O3+O2O2
The net rate depends on consumption of O3 only because O is an intermediate in the steady state assumption.
k=k1=5.2×109
