Question

What are the different ways by which Carbon dioxide is formed?

Open in App
Solution

Different ways by which Carbon dioxide (CO2) is formed are:

Part 1: By heating Limestone or Calcium carbonate (CaCO3):

  • Limestone or Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on heating produces Calcium oxide (CaO) and Carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • The reaction is: CaCO3(s)ā†’āˆ†CaO(s)+CO2(g)

Part 2: By reaction of Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) with dilute Hydrochloric acid (HCl):

  • The reaction of Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) with dilute Hydrochloric acid (HCl) produces Sodium chloride (NaCl), Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
  • The reaction is: Na2CO3(s)+2HCl(aq)ā†’2NaCl(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)

Part 3: By burning carbon or coke in air or oxygen:

  • The reaction of carbon or coke (C) with Oxygen (O2) in air produces Carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • The reaction is: C(s)+O2(g)ā†’CO2(g)
