Solution
Alternation of generation
The alternation of the life cycle of a plant between the haploid gametophytic phase and the diploid sporophytic phase is known as alternation of generations.
Example
For example, a bryophyte completes its life cycle in two distinct phases, a gametophyte stage (haploid) and sporophyte stage (diploid).
The sporophyte produces haploid spores which develop and give rise to the gametophytes.
Gametophytes are the gamete-bearing structures.
The gametes of opposite sex produced by gametophytes fuse and form the zygote.
Zygote develops and gives rise to sporophytes. This cycle continues.
