What is group and period in the periodic table?

Solution

There are mainly two sections to the periodic table: Groups and Periods

Groups:

  1. The vertical rows are known as Groups.
  2. There is a total of 18 groups in the periodic table.
  3. The groups are differentiated on the basis of the number of valence electrons and the level of reactivity.
  4. The outermost electrons of all elements in the same group have the same chemical behaviour.
  5. Groups are distinguished into seven different sections: Alkali metals (Group 1), Alkaline earth metals (Group 2), Transition metals (Group 3-12), Pnictogens (Group 15), Chalcogens (Group 16), Halogens (Group 17), and Noble gases (Group 18).
  6. The shortest groups of the periodic table are from transition metals groups and the longest is Group 3.

Periods:

  1. The horizontal rows of the periodic table are known as the Periods.
  2. There is a total of seven different periods in the periodic table.
  3. They are represented by the total number of outer electrons and have the same number of electron shells.
  4. All the periods show the successive filling of the orbitals in the valence shell and the longest period shows the feeling of the d subshell orbitals.
  5. The longest periods of the periodic table are Period 6 and Period 7.
  6. The elements of the same period indicate about the same energy levels.
