Question

What is the relationship between the electronic configuration of an element and its valency?

Open in App
Solution

In general, the number of electrons in last
shell in electronic configuration determines
the valency of an atom. In simple, Valency is
the number of electron a atom receive or
donate to become stable during chemical
reaction. Valency according to number of
electrons in last shell (valence shell) is as
follows:-

1. Valency list of atom having lor 7
electron in their last shell.

2. Valency 2 is for atom having 2 or 6
electron in their last shell.

3. Valency 3 is for atom having 3 or 5
electron in their last shell.

4. Valency 4 is for atom having 4
electron in their last shell.

But some of the atom also has two or more
valency according to the chemical reaction.
For example: Fe(Iron) has two valency 2 and 3
; Fe203 and Feo.
