What are tropic movements in plants?

Tropic movements in plants:

1. Tropic movement is the movement of a plant in response to environmental stimuli.
2. This movement is caused by root and shoots growth.
3. They are classified into five types:

i) Phototropism:

1. Phototropism is the movement of a plant in response to light.
2. They grow in the direction of the light.
3. It can be either positive.

ii) Geotropism:

1. Geotropism is the movement of plants in response to gravity.
2. They move in the direction of gravity.
3. Roots grow downwards and exhibit positive geotropism.
4. Whereas shoots grow upwards and exhibit negative geotropism.

iii) Chemotropism :

1. The response of plants to chemicals is chemotropism.
2. The movement of pollen grains to the female gamete is an example.
3. This demonstrates positive chemotropism.

iv) Hydrotropism:

1. Hydrotropism is the movement of plants in response to water.
2. The roots of the plant grow in the presence of water.

v) Thigmotropism:

1. Thigmotropism is the reflex movement or action of a plant in response to touch.
2. It is frequently seen in the touch me not plant.
3. The leaves droop when they are touched.
