Question

What would happen if telophase is skipped?

Solution

Cell Cycle:

  1. The sequence of events performed by the cell to carry out cell division is said to be a cell cycle.
  2. The stages of the cell cycle are: Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.

Prophase:

  1. During prophase, chromosomes condense into X-shaped structures.
  2. Each chromosome comprises two sister chromatids that have identical information.
  3. Chromosomes pair up so that both copies of chromosome 1 are together & both copies of chromosome 2 are grouped, and so on.
  4. The membrane surrounding the nucleus at the end of the prophase usually dissolves away and releases chromosomes.
  5. The mitotic spindle expands across the cell b/w centrioles as they drift to opposite poles of the cell.

Metaphase:

  1. Metaphase is usually marked by the alignment of chromosomes at the center of the cell, halfway b/w each of the mitotic spindle poles.
  2. Movement is mediated by kinetochore microtubules that push and pull on chromosomes to align them into what is known as the metaphase plate.

Anaphase:

During anaphase, kinetochore microtubules retract, increasing the separation of sister chromatids as they are moved further towards opposite spindle poles.

Telophase:

  1. New nuclear envelopes form around two groups of daughter chromosomes.
  2. The new nucleoli begin to appear, the formation of the two daughter nuclei is completed, and the spindle fibers disappear.
  3. If a cell skips the telophase or fails to undergo this particular stage, cells will not be able to divide.
  4. As a result, the parent cell would attempt the interphase stage with a different nucleus.
