Question

Which law is also known as Law of constant composition?

Open in App
Solution

Constant composition:

  • The term "constant composition" relates to the fact also that compound's composition does not change throughout time.
  • The law of definite proportions, also known as Proust's law or the rule of constant composition, states that regardless of the source or method of formation, a chemical compound's components are always contained in a fixed ratio (by mass).

Law of definite proportion:

  • According to the Law of Conservation of Mass, mass cannot be generated or destroyed. In a chemical process, the mass of any element remains constant. The law of constant proportion is not the same as this.
  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed, according to the Law of Conservation of Energy. It can only be transformed from one form to another. The law of constant proportion is not the same as this one.
  • The law of multiple proportions describes the composition of two or more components in multiple compounds. The law of constant proportion, on the other hand, is concerned with the composition of constituents in a single compound.
  • The law of definite proportion implies that the proportion of constituents will remain constant throughout the material.

Conclusion:

As a result, the law of definite proportion and the law of constant composition are interchangeable.
