The first and most basic method to detect fetal status is noninvasive and is known as ultrasound imaging or USG. It is used to identify viable pregnancy by detecting foetal heartbeat. Certain observations on an USG can indicate genetic abnormalities. Nuchal translucency, the amount of fluid present under the skin of the baby at the back of its neck can also be measured. USG is not used for extraction of chorionic villi cells.
