Question

Why is meosis called reductional division?

Open in App
Solution

Meiosis is called reductional division because the number of chromosomes in the daughter cells is reduced to half of that of the parent cell. For example, a human cell contains 46 chromosomes, but the egg and sperm cells produced as a result of meiotic division contain 23 chromosomes. Thus, in meiosis diploid number of chromosomes is reduced to haploid number.
