Why is sex-linked inheritance an example of Non-Mendelian inheritance?

Open in App
Solution

Non-Mendelian inheritance:

  1. Any pattern of heredity in which any traits do not segregate according to Mendel's laws of inheritance is known as Non-Mendelian inheritance.
  2. Mendelian inheritance would be seen in autosomal traits, but non-Mendelian inheritance would be seen in sex-linked traits.
  3. The sex-linked traits are controlled by genes found exclusively on the X-chromosome and there is no corresponding allele on the Y chromosome. It is known as the criss-cross inheritance. Therefore, it is an example of non-Mendelian inheritance.
