Solution

The correct option is B 7.2×1010 s
Given:
dNdt=3.7×1010 disintegrations sec1
A=226 g and m=1 g

Number of nuclei in 1 gm

Avogadro's number, NA=6.023×1023 atoms

Now, total number of nuclei,

N=(NAA)m=6.023×1023226×1=2.67×1021

From Decay law,

dNdt=λN

Considering only magnitude,

3.7×1010=λ×2.67×1021

λ=3.7×10102.67×1021=1.39×1011 s1

Mean life, τ=1λ

τ=11.39×1011=0.719×1011

=7.19×1010 s7.2×1010 s.

Hence, (B) is the correct answer.
Why this question?

Hint: In order to solve this problem, first calculate the number of nuclei.
