Percentage purity=Mass of magnesium carbonate actually presentMass of magnesium carbonate that should be theoretically present
The decomposition reaction of MgCO3 can be written as:

MgCO3MgO + CO2

From stoichiometry, 1 mole of MgCO3 decomposes to produce 1 mole of MgO

Moles of MgO formed =GivenmassMolarmass=840=0.2mol

Hence, 0.2 mol of MgCO3 reacted.

% purity =8420×0.2×100=84 %
