Question

A body starts slipping down an incline and moves half meter in half second. How long will it take to move the next half meter?

Solution

Suppose, the body is accelerating downward with an acceleration 'a'

From the free body diagram,
Rmgcosθ=0R=mgcosθandma+mgsinθμR=0a=mg(sinθμcosθ)/m=g(sinθμcosθ)
For the first halfmeter,
u=0,S=5m,So,v=u+at=0+(0.5)4=2m/secFromS=ut+12at20.5=0+12a(0.5)2a=4m/s2
For the next half metre,
u=2m/sec,a=4m/s2,S=0.50.5=2t+(12)4t22l2+t0.5=04t2+4t1=0t=4±16+162×4=1.65680.2027
Time taken to cover next half meter is 0.21 sec.
