Question

A compound contains c=34.6percent ,H=3.85 percent, andO=61.55percent .Calculate the empirical formula

Open in App
Solution

Given mass of carbon = 34.6 %

Given mass of hydrogen = 3.85 %

Given mass of oxygen = 61.55 %

Divide by their molar mass :

Carbon = 34.6 / 12 = 2.88

Hydrogen = 3.85 / 1 = 3.85

Oxygen = 61.55 / 16 = 3.84

Now , divide each with minimum number :

Carbon = 2.88 / 2.88 = 1

Hydrogen = 3.85 / 2.88 =
1.3

Oxygen = 3.84 / 2.88 = 1.3

Multiply by 3 to make them a whole number :

Hence, the empirical formula will be C3H4O4
