Question

A farmer crosses the progeny of a cattle that produces superior progeny, for several generations so as to obtain higher yield. Will he be successful in his attempt? If not, how will he solve this problem? [3]

Solution

As the progeny are of superior quality, mating them or inbreeding will also lead to superior quality progeny for a few generations. [1 mark]

But continued inbreeding results in inbreeding depression which causes reduced fertility and productivity. So, the farmer may not be successful in the later attempts. [1 mark]

He can solve this problem by mating the progeny with unrelated superior individuals of the same breed which will help in restoration of fertility and yield. [1 mark]
