Question

A lorry and a car moving with same K.E. are brought to rest by the action of the brakes which provide equal retarding forces. Which of them will come to rest in a shorter distance?

Solution

Work energy theorem

According to the work-energy theorem, the total work done on a body is equal to the change in its kinetic energy.

Explanation

  1. Since both the lorry and the car have the same kinetic energy, therefore, according to the work-energy theorem, it can be said that the work done by both bodies is the same.
  2. Work done is given as, W=FS, where F is force and S is distance.
  3. It is given that an equal retarding force acts on both bodies.
  4. Since work done by both bodies is the same and the force acting on the two bodies is also the same, therefore, the distance traveled by the two bodies should also be the same.

Therefore, both, the lorry and the car will travel an equal distance before coming to rest.
