Nitric acid (HNO3) is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises the hydrogen produced on the reaction of a metal with nitric acid to water and itself gets reduced to any of the nitrogen oxides (N2O,NO,NO2). However, magnesium and manganese are the only two metals that react with very dilute HNO3 to evolve hydrogen gas.
