Question

A solid sphere of mass 0.50kg is kept on a horizontal surface. The coefficient of static friction between the surfaces in contact is 2/7 . What maximum force can be applied at the highest point in the horizontal direction so that the sphere does not slip on the surface?

Solution

Given: μ=27 and m=0.50kg
According to the question,
ΣT=0
F×R=la×F×R ( ac=Rα)
F=25mRα+μmg ...........(i)

Now, F=macμmg
ac=F+μmgm ..............(ii)

From (i) and (ii), we get

F=25m(F+μmgm)+μmg

F=25(F+μmg)+μmg

Putting all the values, we have
F=5×23=103=3.3N
