Question

A solution of silver nitrate should only be stirred with a spoon made of __________ metal.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Copper (Cu) metal is more reactive than silver (Ag) metal thus, when a copper spoon is stirred in silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution for some time, the solution turns blue as copper displaces silver from Silver nitrate to form silver metal (Ag) and Cupric nitrate ( Cu(NO3)2).
  2. Reaction: Cu(s)+2AgNO3(aq)Cu(NO3)2(aq)+2Ag(s)(Coppermetal)(Silvernitrate)(Coppernitrate)(Silvermetal).

Therefore, a solution of silver nitrate should only be stirred with a spoon made of Copper (Cu) metal.
