The correct option is C 16k3
Let the natural length of original spring be l.

After the spring is cut in ratio 1:3, the lengths will be l4 and 3l4

We know that k 1l

kl =constant ....(i)

After cutting the spring let the new spring constant be k1 and k2 for the individual parts respectively.

From Eq.(i),

k1(l4)=k2(3l4) =kl

k1l4=kl

or, k1 = 4k

Similarly,

3k2l4=kl

Or, k2 = 4k3

If the springs are now connected in parallel,


keq=k1+k2

keq=4k+4k3=16k3

Why this question?Tip––: When the springs are connected in parallel,then extension in both springs will beequal i.e, x1 = x2 however force inspring will vary. On the other hand whenconnected in series the extension in both springswill be different when acted by an external load,i.e. x1 x2.
