Drying agents are known as substances that collect moisture in the form of water vapours.
Hence these drying agents are added to a specific gas or solid to remove the moisture mixed with them so as to get a completely pure substance.
Several compounds are used as drying agents for different gases and solids i.e concentrated sulphuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, and calcium oxide.
Drying agent for Chlorine gas:
Concentrated sulphuric acid is mostly used as a drying agent for chlorine gas.
Before the compression of the chlorine gas, a stream of dilute acid which is a combination of sulphuric acid and chlorine gas gets created which usually contains saturated chlorine gas.
In the final process, the sulphuric acid vapours get segregated from the chlorine gas.
Hence, the drying agent for chlorine gas is concentrated sulphuric acid.
